For years, tourism in Campania followed a fixed calendar: full from April to October, then a long winter of empty rooms and suspended tours. That calendar is changing, and those who notice first can fill the months their competitors write off.

Naples is already changing season

Data from the City of Naples’ Urban Tourism Observatory shows remarkable growth: from about 10.7 million overnight stays in 2022 to more than 20 million in 2025, a 45% increase in the last year alone.

But the most interesting figure for anyone working in winter is another one. According to the Observatory’s estimates, in the first months of 2026 the city welcomed about 1.75 million visitors in January and 1.7 million in February, traditionally quiet months. The same report explicitly describes a trend towards less seasonal flows, with strong demand even in off-peak months.

Who’s coming? Between February 2025 and February 2026 the top international markets were the United Kingdom, Spain, France, Germany and the United States. The average stay in Naples is about three nights. And on the horizon is the 2027 America’s Cup, which estimates suggest could bring around one million extra visitors.

What off-season travellers look for

  • Art and culture: museums, churches, underground sites, archaeological parks without the summer crowds.
  • Food: pizza, pastries, markets, wineries. Food has no season.
  • Events: Christmas on Via San Gregorio Armeno, New Year’s Eve, exhibitions, the San Carlo opera season, sporting events.
  • Better prices: more affordable flights, hotels and tours.
  • Authentic experiences: the city as locals live it, not just tourists.

Strategies for hotels and B&Bs

  1. Themed packages: “Christmas in Naples” with a nativity-scene tour, “Naples at the table” with a food tour, an “Archaeology weekend” with Pompeii and Herculaneum.
  2. Long stays: dedicated rates for guests staying a week or a month, such as remote workers.
  3. Nearby markets: weekends for visitors from Rome, Lazio and Lombardy, already important markets for the city.
  4. Specific segments: honeymoons, small corporate events, school and university groups.
  5. Dynamic pricing: rates that follow real demand, with perks for direct bookers.

Strategies for agencies and tour operators

  • Indoor or weather-proof tours: underground Naples, museums, artisan workshops, tastings.
  • Small groups and private tours, easier to run with few participants.
  • Hotel partnerships for combined packages, with mutual commissions and tracked links.
  • Long-haul markets: visitors from the US or Asia plan months ahead and travel in winter too.

The role of digital

The off-season is sold months in advance, and almost always online:

  • Website content: “What to do in Naples in January”, “Naples in the rain”, “Christmas in Naples”. These are real searches with little competition, and exactly the kind of questions travellers ask AI assistants.
  • Emails to past guests: someone who came in summer may return in winter for a different experience.
  • An events calendar kept up to date on your website and Google listing.
  • Online booking and payment always on, even when the office is closed.
  • Targeted campaigns in markets that travel in winter, with budget moved from months that are already full.

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth staying open in winter?

It depends on fixed costs and location. But Naples’ data shows growing winter demand: it’s worth running the numbers from the last year before closing.

Is cutting prices enough?

Rarely. Without a reason to come (an event, an experience, a package), a low price alone doesn’t create demand.

How far ahead should I promote the off-season?

For European markets, at least two or three months. For long-haul markets, as much as six.
