“Hotels in Naples historic centre”. You type it into Google. Three properties appear in the local pack — the map with the top three results. The other 47 properties in the area? Invisible. Seventy-six per cent of people never scroll past those first three local results. If you are not there, you do not exist.
The good news: reaching Google’s top three for local searches is a science, not an art. It is called local SEO, and with 90 days of structured work you can go from invisible to first in your area. Here is how.
Why local SEO is a different game
Classic SEO optimises your site for global rankings (“best carbonara recipe”). Local SEO optimises for searches with geographic intent (“hotel Naples centre”, “restaurant Sorrento near the sea”).
Google uses different algorithms for the two. For local searches it weighs three main factors:
| Factor | Weight in the algorithm | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Relevance | ~ 30% | Does your Google Business Profile actually answer what the person is looking for? |
| Proximity | ~ 40% | How close are you to the place searched for, or to the person searching? |
| Prominence | ~ 30% | How well known you are online: reviews, links, mentions, citations |
You have little control over the first two — your building is where it is. But prominence is built, and that is where the game is won.
Google Business Profile: ten points to optimise
Your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the heart of local SEO. Getting it right is worth more than months of work on the website. Here is the full checklist.
1. Primary and secondary categories
Get the primary category exactly right (“Hotel”, not “Lodging”). Add two to four relevant secondary categories (“Bed & breakfast”, “3-star hotel”, “Boutique hotel”).
2. Consistent name, address and phone (NAP)
Your NAP must be identical everywhere online — website, social, directories, OTAs. Even “Street” versus “St.” can confuse Google.
3. Photos: at least 30, properly taken
- Exterior: façade, sign, entrance
- Rooms: every type, at least three angles
- Shared areas: lobby, restaurant, pool, terrace
- Bathrooms: the details, shower, bath
- Team: staff at work — it makes the brand human
- Views: what guests actually see from the rooms
4. An optimised description
750 characters. Put your main keyword (“hotel Naples centre”) in the first 250. Mention two or three selling points: “five minutes from the cathedral”, “breakfast included”, “private parking”.
5. Every attribute filled in
Complete all the available attributes: free Wi-Fi, pets allowed, accessibility, payment methods, family facilities and so on. More attributes means more matches with specific searches.
6. Weekly posts
Publish one post a week: offers, events, news from the property. Google rewards active profiles in local ranking.
7. Questions and answers, looked after
Public questions should be answered within 24 hours. Add the most frequent ones yourself, with well-written answers.
8. Reviews: plenty of them, properly handled
See the dedicated section below. Reviews are the single biggest prominence factor.
9. Products and services
Create an entry for each room type, special package and service — transfers, excursions, restaurant. Each one is an extra page of local SEO.
10. Direct messaging switched on
Let people write to you straight from Google. Answer within an hour, or Google penalises the profile.
Local keywords: how to find them for free
Do not chase generic terms like “hotels in Italy”. Go for local long-tail phrases: more specific, less competitive.

Examples of high-intent local keywords
| Keyword | Monthly volume (Italy) | Difficulty | Intent |
|---|---|---|---|
| hotel naples historic centre | ~ 8,100 | High | Direct booking |
| hotel naples near the station | ~ 2,400 | Medium | Direct booking |
| cheap B&B naples with breakfast | ~ 880 | Low | Direct booking |
| hotel naples with parking | ~ 1,300 | Medium | Direct booking |
| hotel naples sea view | ~ 720 | Medium-low | Direct booking |
| where to stay near naples cathedral | ~ 320 | Low | Research and booking |
The winning approach: two or three head keywords with high volume, and 15 to 20 long-tail ones, each with its own page or section.
On-page SEO for hotels: the technical pieces
Title tag
Hotel Naples Historic Centre | [Hotel Name] — 4 Stars, 100m from the Cathedral
Sixty characters at most, main keyword at the start, selling point at the end.
Meta description
155 characters at most, keyword plus a call to action: “Four-star hotel in the heart of Naples, 100m from the cathedral. Free Wi-Fi, breakfast included. Book now for our best rate.”
Hotel schema markup (JSON-LD)
Implement Schema.org’s Hotel type on your site. It lets Google read your stars, prices, reviews and GPS location. Properties with complete schema markup see 32% more clicks from search results.
Structured URLs
yourhotel.com/rooms/double-room-sea-view✅yourhotel.com/?page=125&room=003❌
Heading hierarchy
One H1 per page, H2 for main sections, H3 for sub-sections. Main keyword in the H1, variations in the H2s.
Local link building that works
Links from relevant sites are still an important ranking factor. In tourism, aim for:
- Local tourism directories — the city council site, regional tourist boards
- Partnerships with attractions — “partner hotel of the archaeological museum”, with a reciprocal link
- Travel bloggers — a complimentary stay in exchange for an article (mind the disclosure rules: it must be declared)
- Local press releases — when something is new, send it to the local papers
- Events and sponsorships — sponsoring a cultural event earns a link from the event site
- Universities and colleges — work with tourism and hospitality courses; academic links carry weight
Reviews: how to get more of them, legitimately
Google reviews are the single biggest prominence factor. Properties with 50 or more reviews and an average above 4.5 appear in the local pack three times as often as those with fewer.
A system that keeps producing reviews
- A QR code in the room that goes straight to your Google review page
- An automatic email 24 hours after check-out with a short link
- Asking in person at check-out: “If your stay was a good one, a Google review would help us enormously”
- A WhatsApp follow-up two days after they get home
- Never a cash incentive — Google forbids it. You may offer “10% off your next stay” as a general thank-you, not tied to leaving a review
How to reply
- To every one, within 48 hours — the good ones included
- Work local keywords into your replies (“Thank you for choosing our hotel in the heart of Naples…”)
- For negative reviews: apologise, offer a fix, move to a private channel. Never argue in public
